The Star Thrower Story…
A man walking along the beach came upon scores of starfish stranded on the shore. Pondering a moment, he stooped, picked one up and threw it back into the sea. A bystander approached him and gesturing toward the many starfish still stranded on the beach, asked “What difference did that make?” The man replied,“To that one it made all the difference in the world.”
The Family Promise Story…
Family Promise volunteers also make a difference; one family at a time.
On April 21, 2005, Family Promise of Sacramento opened the Day Center doors to help newly homeless families move back into self-sufficiency. This unique program is comprised of a caring interfaith network of more than 1000 volunteers from 16 host and four support congregations. Three to four times a year, each host congregation provides nighttime shelter and meals for four families (up to 14 people). Some Family Promise graduates have become volunteers themselves, giving back to their community by helping other families struggling to regain their independence.
To be eligible for the Family Promise program, a family must include at least one adult and at least one child, who share mutual bonds of love and commitment.
