Saving Families

Laila-and-RaulLianna, Laila and Raul were homeless without an income.

Lianna, Laila and Raul were homeless with nowhere to sleep, and without an income. After being in the program at Family Promise, they have a home in Serna Village and both Raul and Lianna are employed. (Lianna works at the Mustard Seed School at Loaves and Fishes), and the family recently welcomed a new baby girl into the family!

“Family Promise has been the life-changing factor in my life. You did something my own family didn’t do: You welcomed us. There were all these people believing in me, encouraging and welcoming me.  These were ultimate factors in the progress of my life.” –Liana, graduate of Family Promise of Sacramento.

Family Promise has allowed me to become the man I truly am. I’ve learned here how to keep my own family promises.” –Raul, graduate of Family Promise of Sacramento.

NellWithout Nell, her grandchildren would have been put into foster care.

Nell has been the full-time caregiver for Tarah,Tamrah and Tylon since their infancy. Times have not been easy. Nell, a retired nurse relocated herself and the kids from out of state in search for a better life.  They resided with a niece for a while and eventually became homeless before finding Family Promise. Nell continued to
help her grandchildren despite depleting her savings.

With the help of Family Promise’s support system, Nell and her grandchildren moved into an apartment in November, 2009. During their stay of a little over 3 months at Family Promise, saved enough money to help them as they venture forth, leaving homelessness behind.

Literally, Family Promise rescued us. We are surrounded by love and we have been content and happy. I can’t thank Family Promise enough,” says Nell about the program.

Favor And RyanFavor and Ryan owned a condo and were living the American Dream…
and the bubble burst. They moved to a rental and eventually into shelters, where Favor and the children were housed separately from husband and dad, Ryan. They were featured on the Oprah Winfrey Show on the homeless in Sacramento. At that same time, they entered Family Promise.

They are now living in a three bedroom home. Their new addition, a baby due in December, 2009, will have a place to lay his or her head. Ryan is attending a business college. The children bounced right back into great academic scores. Noah is on the basketball team. The family expresses appreciation to Family Promise staff and volunteers who took them in when they had nowhere else to turn and helped them on their way to self-sufficiency.

Robert-and-StaceyRobert, an Iraqi veteran, Stacey and their 3 kids were homeless experiencing major health issues.

Robert and Stacey had major health issues and were struggling to find employment. After gaining employment as a welder, Robert is currently serving his second tour in Iraq. Robert is now employed as a welder and Stacy is ready to go back to work following surgery. With the support of Family Promise, the family is no longer homeless and lives in a 3 bedroom home in Rio Linda.

To be homeless is probably, in my opinion, one of the worst feelings in life- uncertain, anxious, scared, depressed, worthless and undervalued. Family Promise helped Stacy and I grow together.  I thank God for this program.  It’s the volunteers that made this place work.    Thanks to everyone who cared enough about us to help us out.” – Robert, graduate of Family Promise.
